Audit and Compliance

Compliance with all environmental, health and safety laws is imperative to our business worldwide. Pfizer's baseline commitment is to maintain full EHS compliance. Routine internal audits of our sites help ensure compliance and provide a strong driver for continuous improvement.

Pfizer's EHS Standards are the foundation for the audit process. Proven, documented risk management approaches, procedures, and guidance documents support implementation of the Standards and augment the audit process ensuring our baseline commitment can be met.

Performance:
Despite our efforts, on occasion, we have not met our high standard of performance.

  • In 2009, Pfizer acquired Wyeth. During that year, legacy Wyeth paid $5,250 in civil penalties. This amount includes two separate violations, one for alleged exceedances of an air permit limit with penalties paid to the Puerto Rico Environmental Quality Board ("EQB") ($3,000), and the other paid to the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) for alleged non-compliance associated with proper personal protective equipment and a minor injury suffered by a colleague ($2,250).
  • In 2008, Pfizer paid a civil penalty of $975,000 to settle allegations by U.S. EPA that our former Groton manufacturing facility violated certain Hazardous Air Pollutant regulations (leak detection and repair requirements) between 2002 and 2005. When initially notified of the alleged violations in 2006, Pfizer acted promptly to assure the facility's compliance. Pfizer has no reason to believe and the Government never asserted that the alleged violations resulted in any environmental harm or threatened human health.

In all cases, our EHS management systems provided mechanisms for prompt and comprehensive corrective action, and none of the cases presented a significant risk to public health or the environment.
